Midsummer's Eve Moves - Retreat
===============================
When the host BBS's daily event is run at the end of a Spring turn day, the
computer scans through all entered moves, evaluating which attacks and convoys
were successful, and which were not.
Suppose a unit successfully attacks a territory occupied by a holding unit.
For example, the set of orders shown in section F, on support:
German army in I: Belgium HOLDS
French army in e: Burgundy ATTACKS I: Belgium
French army in d: Picardy SUPPORTS French army in e: Burgundy
ATTACKING I: Belgium
The German army and the French army are now both located in Belgium, which is
clearly against the rules. Therefore, on the Midsummer turn, the German army
(which lost to the French army's attack) must retreat from its position in
Belgium. When the German player selects Belgium's order to edit, (s)he will be
asked if the unit is to be disbanded. This defaults to YES. If it is not, it
may then move to any UNOCCUPIED territory which it borders on. If the player
tries to retreat to an occupied territory, or two units try two retreat to the
same territory, it or they are disbanded. Disbanded units may possibly be
rebuilt at the end of the year (see sections I and J).
An attack or convoy can be unsuccessful for a number of reasons: The destina-
tion territory of the attack may have been previously occupied by a holding
unit, and ties in the amount of support always go to the holding unit; a
supporting or convoying unit may have been attacked, forcing that unit to
defend itself and breaking the convoy or support; or, another unit may have
attacked the same territory, with an equal or greater amount of support. If an
attack is not successful, normally, the attacking (or convoying) unit stays in
its original position. However, if that position has been moved into by
another unit on the same turn, the losing unit will find itself forced to
retreat. Consider the following moves:
Aust'n army in k: Tyrolia ATTACKS Q: Venice
Ital'n army in Q: Venice HOLDS
Ital'n army in i: Piedmont ATTACKS k: Tyrolia
Normally, the Austrian army would just stay in Tyrolia. However, while it was
out waging war (unsuccessfully) in Venice, the Italian army from Piedmont took
over. Therefore, on the Midsummer turn, Italy would have armies holding in
Venice and Tyrolia, and Austria would have an army retreating from Tyrolia.
